Mayor Nagin apologizes for chocolate comments
Curt Sprang, January 17, 2006, 6:09 PM CST New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin says he's sorry for some of his comments during a Martin Luther King Day celebration. During his King day speech, the mayor told a crowd outside city hall that New Orleans should be a majority African American city because that's the way God wants it. Nagin also told the crowd that New Orleans will be a, "Chocolate city." "I will tell you this. I probably, I did offend some people. For that, I am sorry. I apologize. It was never my intentions to say anything disparaging about anybody," Nagin told ABC26 News from his city hall office. Nagin says he was trying to bolster the spirits of African Americans who feel the city's rebuilding plan will take their property and force them to move. Nagin does not think that the comments will hurt the recovery effort or his re-election campaign. "All I'm asking for is to basically understand what I was trying to accomplish and the reasoning behind it. I think when everyone evaluates Ray Nagin, they're going to look at my entire four year period and what I've done over those four years." Nagin responded specifically to the "chocolate city" comment, saying he's used the same comment in the past and didn't offend anyone. "I've used that particular phrase so many times since I've been in office, whether it be conventions that have been in town, before Congress, in mixed groups, in predominantly white groups," Nagin said. As for the comment about the city being a majority African American because God wants it that way, Nagin reponded," If there's anything I could take back from yesterday, that would be it. The God comments were totally inappropriate for that setting. That's something that's private. And I shouldn't have shared it with anybody."
